Terri Mercieca
GAF Fellow 2009 Terri Mercieca has a love of chocolate!
Terri is an accomplished chocolatier and pastry chef, who wanted to bridge the skill and knowledge gaps in the chocolate industry in Australia, with a focus on artisanal chocolate productions. Terri's acceptance to ISSI provided her with mentors, networks and contacts and helped her to devise an international study tour that gave her access to some of the best chocolatiers in the world.
Terri is now focused on sharing these riches with the industry and happily, with consumers too. Terri's fellowship was valued at $20,000.
Stories from the Foundation's scholars
Murdoch University, WA
Courtney Ludwig - Bachelor of Animal Science - Veterinary Science
Without GAF, university would not be possible for me. As I am independent from my parents, I have no financial support, so this Scholarship was vital in determining whether tertiary education was an option for me. it has also made it possible for me to live my first three years in the Student Village, which I would otherwise not be able to do. This provided me with experiences and friendships that I will take with me for the rest of my life.
RMIT University, VIC
Siobhan Phillips - Bachelor of Applied Science - Medical Radiations
As I am previously from a rural area, the GAF Scholarship helps with all my course expenses and the costs of living away from home. Due to the large amount of clinical placement hours in my course, the Scholarship will also help to supplement my income when I am on clinical placement and am unable to work at my casual job. Being awarded the Scholarship and being able to take part in accredited leadership training is also very exciting and will help me grow as an individual.
Centre for Sustainable Leadership, NSW
Sheena Watt - Centre for Sustainable Leadership (CSL) Fellowship Program 2010
This course has built my knowledge, skills and confidence to work with the Indigenous community to tackle climate change. Doing the CSL program through the generous support of GAF is making my dreams come true... I'm organising a delegation of amazing Indigenous young people to go to Mexico for the UN Climate Change Summit and let world leaders know how climate change affects us.
Deakin University, VIC
Stephanie Cowdery - Bachelor of Arts - Media and Communication
When I heard that I was one of the lucky recipients of The George Alexander Foundation Scholarship, to say that I was ecstatic, would be an understatement.
I am glad to say that I have not only been able to start my training for my dream career, but that thanks to the Foundation I can afford transport to uni, all my books, and I'm glad to say that I have not been forced to live on a diet of two minute noodles, as I had feared I would.
